College Station announces Juneteenth events featuring Grammy-nominated Cedric Watson
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were free. The announcement came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect, marking a pivotal moment in American history.
More than a century and a half later, we celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday, a time to reflect on the past, honor resilience and progress, and come together to celebrate Black history, culture, and community.
The College Station Parks and Recreation Department invites you to learn, connect, and commemorate the holiday through special community programs.
Both June 18 events will feature Cedric Watson, a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler, singer, accordionist, and songwriter widely recognized as one of the leading voices in Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco music.
