One Weekend Only! The Theatre Company of Bryan College Station presents Hedwig and the Angry Inch June 25-27
The Theatre Company of Bryan/College Station is pleased to present HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, the final “Off the Menu” production of Season 36.5,. As with other OTM offerings, HEDWIG provides local audiences with the rare opportunity to experience performances of lesser known but critically acclaimed and culturally significant musical theatre. Intended for mature audiences, this award-winning rock musical (story by John Cameron Mitchell, music and lyrics by Stephen Trask) is an enduring tale of identity, resilience, and self-acceptance.
After playing off-Broadway in 1998 and in London’s West End in 2000, HEDWIG opened on Broadway in 2014, winning a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical that year. It toured nationally until 2017. A successful film version was released in 2001. The story recounts the experiences of Hedwig (TTC regular Bran Kempf), an East German singer-songwriter who undergoes a sex-change operation that goes badly. Hedwig immigrates to the U.S. and tours with her band, The Angry Inch (Hunter Browning, Syd Pospech, Bailey Rogers, Ethan Whitlow, and Aaron Wunneburger), narrating her personal history through glam-rock and darkly comic monologues. With a personal story set against the global backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hedwig comes to understand that redemption comes through self-acceptance, rather than the love or fame she’s been conditioned to pursue.
