Tragedy in Chicago: A Mother’s Life Taken in

Front of Her Son

A heartbreaking tragedy shook Chicago’s South Loop on Monday morning when
31-year-old mother Romeca Meeks was shot and killed outside her young son’s
school.

According to police, Meeks was dropping her son off just after 9 a.m. near 22nd
Street and South State Street when she became involved in a confrontation with her
son’s father’s girlfriend.

During the altercation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Meeks in
the face at close range. She was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where she was later
pronounced dead.

Authorities say the shooter is in custody, though her name has not been released.
Investigators believe the deadly dispute was domestic in nature, involving Meeks’
ex-partner and his current girlfriend, who is also the mother of one of his children.

Witnesses reported seeing the man, known online as #rackboyloso, holding Meeks
in a headlock when the gun was fired. While the boyfriend has claimed self-defense,
the suspected shooter reportedly told bystanders she is licensed to carry a firearm.

Perhaps the most devastating part of this tragedy is that it happened in front of
Meeks’ young son. Loved ones say she had even left him a heartfelt note in his
lunchbox that morning—the last one he would ever receive from his mother.

This senseless act highlights the urgent need for maturity and responsibility when it
comes to co-parenting. Baby mamas and baby daddies need to work together
better. This should have never happened at all—especially not in front of a child.

As adults, we have a duty to handle conflicts with respect and care, always keeping
the child’s well-being at the center. Let’s think before we act and choose peace over
pain.
