Aggieland News with Shani Scott
Good morning Aggieland, here’s what’s making headlines in Bryan and
College Station.
First up—Friday, September 12th is officially Alex Caruso Day in Aggieland.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard and former Texas A&M basketball star, Alex
Caruso, is being honored by both Bryan Mayor Bobby Gutierrez and
College Station Mayor John Nichols. Caruso, who was born and raised
right here in College Station, has made it his mission to give back through
the Alex Caruso Foundation, raising money for youth programs and
opportunities.
This past weekend, Caruso hosted his second annual golf tournament
benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of the Brazos Valley. And while the NBA
champ was a big draw, the real star on the green was the Larry O’Brien
Championship Trophy, which Caruso brought along after helping his
Oklahoma City Thunder capture the NBA title this summer. Mayor Nichols
said it best: “It’s our pleasure to welcome Alex back again and express our
gratitude for all he continues to do for the College Station and Bryan
communities.”
Meanwhile in Brenham—residents may notice some unusual sounds in the
sky. The City of Brenham is teaming up with the Texas Wildlife Services
Program to respond to complaints about vultures causing property damage
in neighborhoods like S Chappell Hill, Kerr, and Pecan Streets. Crews will
be using pyrotechnics—nicknamed “screamers” and “bangers”—to scare
the birds away. Don’t worry, the loud pops and screeches are safe for
people, but effective at keeping the vultures from roosting and spreading
disease.
And finally—Sharing the Facts: The 2025 Bryan ISD Bond. The Bryan
ISD Board of Trustees has called for a $397 million bond election that will
appear on the ballot November 4th. The bond would provide upgrades to
all 23 campuses in Bryan ISD, improving classrooms, facilities, and safety.
Key dates to remember: the last day to register to vote is October 6th, and
early voting runs from October 20th through the 31st.
